I live in a hot and humid environment (North Texas) and purchased this to use in my bedroom.This unit produces literally gallons of water at night when I leave it on the cool mode.Because it is low to the ground, I have to put it up on a table with the side of it hanging off of the edge and dripping into large pots.Note that the water is not coming out of the installed drain, but just dripping off the sides on the bottom.
I'm in the process of purchasing some sort of pan and pump to place it in so I can quit dumping out large pots of water every 6-8 hours.
I give it 2 stars because the thing does cool, but I would NEVER recommend this to somebody who was going to use it on carpet.Their floors would be ruined no matter how hard they tried.

(More customer reviews)I don't know if I've got a defective unit or not but I've had the thing running for nearly three days in a room about 250 square feet and the thermostat still says 77 degrees (I've got it set for 68). This is awful. In the morning I get colder air by putting a fan in my window. This is nothing more than a very expensive fan. I'm horribly disappointed with this machine and caution others against it.

Additionally, the exhaust kit doesn't fit my standard window opening and the exhaust tubing gets super hot. So, there's a battle between the marginal coolness of the unit versus the unendurable heat of the exhaust. Lucky me.

(More customer reviews)I bought one of the LG portable air conditions (model LP1010SNR) today at one of the local big box hardware stores. Choose this model over a Sharp CV-10NH - no real reason for doing so, both units had similar features and were the same price. So far the LG unit works as I assumed it would. Right now the only complaint I have is about the way the unit connects to an outside window for its exhaust. I've got burglar bars and the exhaust hose window connection won't fit through the bars (my bars on the inside of the windows). But even given that, what you get for materials for building the window dam that the exhaust hose connects to are pretty flimsy. I'm using what I got with the unit right now, but I will be building something of my own ASAP. Other than that I have no complaints. The unit seems to be working great. Seems to put out more cold air than my house central HVAC unit does.

Haier HWR08XC7 8,000-BTU Window Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

1) This unit is loud. I mean it, it's LOUD!!! Even when running at minimal speed, with "energy saving" mode on. Not sure how many decibels (db) it pumps out, but it's pretty close to my vacuum cleaner. In a 200 sq.ft. room, you won't be able to sleep or watch TV or conduct a conversation with this air conditioner on, granted!

2) It doesn't cool our room (280 sq.ft) well. They say it's 8,000 BTU. Well, I would subjectively say it's closer to 6,000 than 8,000. The outcoming air is just marginally cooler than the room air. Also, the internal temperature sensor is off by about 5 degrees. Right now it shows 68'F, perhaps to look good and show that the A/C is doing it's job... However my wall room thermometer stands 72'F! Well, here in the U.S, we call this cheating. Big no-no.
Bottom line: we're returning this one back, even though we got it cheap, with 30% off the price sticker. Well, now I know why... you get what you pay.

(More customer reviews)I have a home office in an attic that's sun-baked in the summer and drafty in the winter, and this powerful heater/air conditioner can quickly bring the space to a comfortable temperature year-round.

Unfortunately, the unit is quite loud. The AC fan (which runs continuously even when the compressor is off) is so loud I have to turn it off when making a phone call. And the heater (which turns off completely when not in a heating cycle) makes such a jarring noise when it comes on that I jump out of my seat every time. The AC noise wouldn't be a problem if it were further from my desk, but if I had this in a bedroom there's no way I'd be able to sleep with that heater noise.

Also, despite the unit being marketed as not needing a water tank or drain for air conditioning, it does occasionally leak water onto the floor. Placing a cookie sheet or an improvised aluminum foil pan underneath is an easy solution, but it took me a while to notice what was happening.

Despite these concerns, I'd buy the same unit again due to its environmental features. The dual-hose design makes it more efficient, and the coolant doesn't harm the ozone layer. Unless the noise would be a problem in your situation, I'd recommend it.

(More customer reviews)I bought the 12000 BTU unit and this one, as well as the one I have, has a 'swing' function which moves the air in multiple directions.At first we were going to return the unit, it didn't seem to cool after testing it out a day and a night.I realized that the default setting of 72 degrees was merely blowing air out.I dropped the unit temperature down to 64 degrees and I heard the compressor kick on.After that it had no problem cooling our living room, even when the temperature was above 90 degrees outside.The exhaust tube does get a bit warm, but I bought a tube insulation kit for it, which I haven't needed to put on it yet.Overall, this A.C. does what it needs to do and I love the swing function.Oh yeah, it comes with a bucket that is for draining the water from the unit before end of season storage, and does not attach to the unit, which I had to call the 800 number about.The company was very easy to contact with any questions.

First of all, even though it says on the box "ultra quiet", it is nearly as noisy as vacuum cleaner, you won't be able to sleep or talk while it is on. Also it doesn't cool well, we have a very small bedroom {only big enough to fit a queen size bed and two dressers, with not much room left} and it doesn't cool it nearly as well as our old GE Air Conditioner {that is only 5000 BTU}. I am taking it back today and will rather wait for a nicer one {all the stores are out of A/C right now and this one was the only one we found, but better nothing then this one}

Now it has come to a point where portable units have moved beyond your functional clunky beige contraption to something that has been designed to subtly blend into the surroundings. After deciding between this and a Delonghi (yes, I've finally arrived now that I can afford high-end appliances!) I decided to go with the more compact unit that was at a more affordable price point. I've been using this for about a month now and have been completely satisfied with nearly all aspects. One little gripe that I have, is the absence of handles on the side, it definitely is heavy too. It does however churn out very very cold air, look extremely slick and is a snap to use.The remote control has a myriad of functions that I will eventually use one day but for now, I just need the icey relief from a hot spring day.

Whynter 12,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner ARC-12S Review

(More customer reviews)The kit they use to vent the hot, moist air out the window is cheap.How cheap?I followed the directions to tighten the screws and with very little force stripped out the hole before the screw was even fully tightened.The plastic that fits in the window is soft.The part that connects the hose to the window panel doesn't attach well due to the same issue with the screws so ours fell out in the middle of the night.I've seen the exact same window kit on other brands of portable air conditioners so it could be that only one company is making the window kit and selling them to the different air conditioner companies, so buying a different brand may not do you much good.

There is a work-around, tho.The enterprising few can cut a piece of wood to the right dimensions to fit their window, weather strip it around the edges, and cut a hole to vent the air from the unit - it has a fitting on the end that attaches via 4 screws.

Another work-around (which we'll probably do) is replace the screws with nuts and bolts so they can't fall out during use.

Other than that, the unit works fine.It weights around 70 lb, which isn't too heavy compared to some.We used it in a room that was larger than we should have, just to try it out and it cooled the room just fine.

Most of the moisture is evaporated and sent out the window but there is a tray that needs to be emptied sometimes. Unfortunately it is not a pull out and dump type, but has a tiny plug about an inch from the floor to drain the water from, so I guess you'll have to haul it to the shower to empty.This is also not uncommon for these types of portable air conditioners, sadly.

I sincerely doubt that it will really cool a 450 sq ft area but it does a great job for my bedroom upstairs...which is all I was really concerned with. My bedroom measures 13' x 12' or 156 sq ft and it takes about an hour to get from 85° F to 69° F. Setting it up was a breeze. The only problem I had was with the window exhaust kit. The expandable PVC plastic window mount wasn't long enough to cover the entire height of my bedroom window...it's about 5 inches too short. I had to cover that space with a piece of plastic that I cut to fit and duct taped in place. One thing I don't like about this unit is the placement of the exhaust hose...it's in the back. Some units have it on the top of the unit so that you can place the unit almost flush against the wall. The back of my unit sticks out about a foot and a half from the wall which makes getting around it a slight pain in the rear...but hey, at least I'll be cool this summer :). Another con...it doesn't have oscilating louvers. The louvers are fixed and can't be adjusted up or down. There are lateral louvers behind the front grill that can be adjusted manually from side to side with a slider. Oh...and one more thing...it's pretty loud when the compressor is running. It takes some getting used to.

Haier CPRB07XC7 7,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control Review

(More customer reviews)I'm coming up on the second season of hard use.I have it in the bedroom and at night this thing will chill you out.During the day (I work nights) we get full sun and it still keeps you about 73 deg.If temps outside reach 90+ it'll keep you about 75.I use it in conjuction with old central air unit that will keep downstairs nice but once you get above the first floor good luck.This runs almost 24 hours a day during 7 months and all you have to do is vacuum the back (cooling fins) and vacuum the front filter (slides out).You never have to drain (I do after winter sets in).I liked ours so much I bought a second for the 3rd floor.As far as noise...you know it's there but like anything else you get used to it and can tune it out.The only bad thing about this is I think the portables are a little more than the window units and don't cool as much but they aren't "portable" and can be rolled into a closet or extra room.The set-up on these is considerably easier also: open window, add insert, duct tape insert into window and you're ready to rock.Another bad is that if you loose the remote or the batteries go (over 2yrs and still good) you can't control the unit without it (temp, fan speed, mode, timer).

(More customer reviews)I got this to supplement the window unit I've been using for years and ended up just completely replacing the window unit.
Very robotic design, it stands around 3ft tall and is in fact rather slim once you take it out of the packaging.Came with all the necessary accessories to get it running immediately. Hooking it up and putting the hot air vent where my window A/C used to be was extremely straightforward.

We usually power it up after my daughter returns from pre-school and set the temperature to around 74F.It usually shuts off at about 2am when the room and outside temps are nice and comfortable.The air is extremely cold around the unit and gets a good sized room down to a nice temp really fast.It seems very quiet during the day with all the other sounds and my daughter has slept like a baby ever since we got it.I does emit a low hum when it's cooling but otherwise the fan sound is not noticeable to me. You can turn it on high for a few minutes but after awhile, that's overkill. It does a great job on a low fan setting once the room is almost at the temp you want it at.

I really like the idea of not having to use central air like in our old apartment. I think over time the utility savings will easily cover the cost of the unit. The best part is I can bring it with us if we ever move.

It's worked excellently for a couple of weeks now and I may just end up getting another for our own room.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this in June when I couldn't take the NYC heat anymore.My window unit broke at the end of last summer, and due the prohibitively expensive delivery/installation costs in NYC for a 4th floor walkup apartment with extra wide windows, I decided to get a portable standing A/C-- my first.

I'm sure a lot of the issues I'm pointing out here have to do with the fact that portable units are just not as efficient as window units, but this 12,000 BTU unit does not cool my apartment nearly as quickly as my mighty little 8,000 BTU window unit used to.The nice thing about the portable unit which is an advantage over my old window unit is that while I have it installed in my bedroom, I can blast just my bedroom only (8 ft x 14 ft) by shutting the door, or angle it to cool the living room only (20 ft x 22 ft), or to hit both rooms.The bedroom gets cool enough when I shut the door so that the unit is cooling my bedroom only (and the temperature reading on the unit can get down to 73 degrees); it is a challenge to completely cool the living room area on a really hot day, but that was an issue even when I had my window unit (also installed in my bedroom).When I do try to cool just the living room (essentially dragging the unit to the doorway of the bedroom and blasting it only into the living room), while the living room can sometimes cool down to a comfortable temperature, the bedroom then heats up because the PVC exhaust pipe leading from the unit to the bedroom window gets quite hot.

It is also very noisy.The first week, I could hardly fall asleep because of the noise.It is like sleeping near a generator.I guess I've gotten used to it by now, but I definitely think that it could have been designed better to be quieter.Also, even on low speed, it's just as loud as when it's on high speed.

Beware that all portable units will require some kind of exhaust pipe to be connected to the window so that the heat generated by the unit can escape.You only need a small window, however, much smaller than an A/C would need, so if you have a basement apartment with a small window, you'd probably still be able to accommodate this unit.

If you have a living situation that allows a window unit to be installed more easily and inexpensively, I would certainly recommend that.For those who cannot install window units for whatever reason, this portable unit is OK, but I wonder if there are more efficient, quieter units out there.Also, I sometimes wonder if I made the right decision to keep the unit because portable A/C's cost more than window units, and maybe I should have just sucked up the outrageous installation charges associated with a window unit which may have been a more efficient cooling system.
