I live in a hot and humid environment (North Texas) and purchased this to use in my bedroom.This unit produces literally gallons of water at night when I leave it on the cool mode.Because it is low to the ground, I have to put it up on a table with the side of it hanging off of the edge and dripping into large pots.Note that the water is not coming out of the installed drain, but just dripping off the sides on the bottom.
I'm in the process of purchasing some sort of pan and pump to place it in so I can quit dumping out large pots of water every 6-8 hours.
I give it 2 stars because the thing does cool, but I would NEVER recommend this to somebody who was going to use it on carpet.Their floors would be ruined no matter how hard they tried.

(More customer reviews)I don't know if I've got a defective unit or not but I've had the thing running for nearly three days in a room about 250 square feet and the thermostat still says 77 degrees (I've got it set for 68). This is awful. In the morning I get colder air by putting a fan in my window. This is nothing more than a very expensive fan. I'm horribly disappointed with this machine and caution others against it.

Additionally, the exhaust kit doesn't fit my standard window opening and the exhaust tubing gets super hot. So, there's a battle between the marginal coolness of the unit versus the unendurable heat of the exhaust. Lucky me.

The thermostat to control the fan speed is a great idea, but ours doesn't consistently run only when the AC kicks on. When it does run, it's not exactly quiet and kind of annoying. However, we do manage to sleep through it fine. Overall though, I gave this product only 2 stars because it doesn't force that much more cold air into the room. It would also be helpful if the vent slats were directional. Running the fan function by itself (not with the AC) produces no extra cold air, only air movement.
After purchasing one, I hoped it would work at least okay to purchase another for my upstairs office. Instead, I'm shelling out the money for a free standing AC unit. I'd advise you to do the same if you want cold air.

Soleus Air MAC-12 12,000 BTU Evaporative Portable AC/Dehumidifier/Heater and Fan with Remote Review

(More customer reviews)I didn't buy the soleus mac12K at amazon but rather from a retail outlet here in southern CA.After being disappointed with an earlier purchase that I made online, I decided to go into a brick and mortar store and ask the relevent questions.

I was told by the salesman that the reason that the previous air conditioner doesn't work was becuase of the single hose exhuast.The soleus, with it's dual hose design and 12000 btu of cooling power would make my 170 sq ft room freeze.That turned out to be an outright lie.

I started out by testing the air conditioner in the living room with a sliding door.The unit worked well for the first few minutes, cooling the room from about 90 to 87 degrees.Then the compressor would stop running and the cooling mode acted like fan mode and started heating the room back to over 90 degrees.I would be able to get the compressor to work again by unplugging the ac plug and then starting the ac again.The same problem repeated.

Then I moved the air conditioner into the kitchen.It was about 95 degrees to begin with and it only got to 92 and did not drop even after an hour. There were no problems here with the compressor turning off for no reason.

Then I moved the air condtioner into the bedroom.It was able to cool the room down only a few degrees.Besides being loud, it also takes up a lot of current, 12A to be exact and 1350W of power.This would repeatedly trip up the circuit breaker if other appliances such as iron or computers were to be used that were on the same circuit.

The air conditioner appeared to work better when the outside temperature was below 80 degrees.But even then, it does not cool the room below 72.But with the outside temperature in the mid to upper 90s, the room would be in the mid to upper 80s.About the only thing that worked as advertised was that there was no bucket to empty.

I ended up returning the unit after a week with a 25% restocking fee.I was offered an exchange but didnt' even bother.

I had a repair tech out and even he said in not so many words that these units are garbage.(He couldn't do anything for me).
Just spoke to a friend who also got the 12,000 btu unit and he has the same problem, IT JUST DOESN'T DO THE JOB!

This was a very costly mistake to make.

(More customer reviews)This unit will cool your place by 10 degrees within a reasonable amount of time (e.g. 30 minutes) but you will also need to empty the drain pan (for water) every hour or two/if that long/or else your carpets will be soaking wet from the drain pan that overflows. Even when you DO empty it on time, the design of the pan makes it very easy to spill water all over the place and DON'T forget the cheasy hose! Once you pull the drain pan away from the air conditioner, it continues to leak water all over the floor through that cheasy hose.

(More customer reviews)For what it's worth, a certain store with the intitials 'HD' will take back anything, even after a year.We bought this from '*ears' (if you know what I mean) and I am sure they could care less about anything 13 mos. out from the warranty period. Here's my review.

I bought 2 Royal Soverign a/c units, 12,000 BTU from Sears in 6/08.We haven't used them a whole lot. Ours are tan with a black exhaust area/top. Models ARP 3012. We paid $599 each.

We left for the day and like we always do, turn the a/c to a lower setting.A family member had stopped over and I had her check to make sure the a/c was on. She said the unit upstairs was off.I thought that was odd, as I had left it on.When she turned it on, it sounded like 100 forks in a garbage disposal.I could hear it over the phone. Apparently, due to the issue, the unit was over-heating and then turning itself off.We are lucky the house didn't burn down.

When we got home we looked into the issue and after removing the tubing from the unit, we instantly found shards of cheap black plastic.Some parts looked tube like.We removed the 14 screws on the back, cleaned up the broken plastic laying inside the unit (we thought it was part of the exhaust) and thinking everything was fine (but were were still going to look into what that tubing was for) and we put the back of the unit back on and we turned it on.More horrible breaking of plastic sounds and then more plastic was sucked into the tubing.We're thinking that the case that surrounds the fan blade and compressor is breaking up. We are sure that this will eventually happen with our 2nd unit.I would not buy a Royal Soverign brand. I'll check back and give an update when I can as we have plans to drop it off at a service location.The compressor is covered for 5 years.We will not be paying a dime to have this fixed!

The unit cools well.It is small and easy to move.

The dehumidifier is fairly noisy and it runs when the unit is in dehumidifier mode or in air conditioner mode.The compressor (which only runs in air conditioning mode) is very quiet as is the fan.I would not use this unit in a bedroom.

Installing the exhaust hose was a bit difficult as the hose did not have any end coverings and was a tight fit into the widow and air conditioner connectors.

The window slider kit is easy to install but the height is too small.The slider is only a little bit bigger that the opening for the window exhaust adapter.With the adapter in the slider does not sit on the bottom of the window frame.In my window there is a half-inch gap between the bottom of the slider and the bottom of the window frame that has to be filled in.

BTW, the instructions for removing the unit from the packaging material and box require you to destroy both so there isn't any way to repack the unit if you need to ship it back.

Royal Sovereign ARP-4009 Portable Air Conditioner 9,000 BTU Review

(More customer reviews)We purchased the royal Sovereign ARP-4009 June 2008, used it last summer for about 3 months and didn't turn it on again until July of this year. It worked for about one week and stopped blowing cold air after that. The unit still turns on and produces air but it blows hot air. We realized that we had just missed the one-year Full Warranty period but the unit still qualifies for the LimitedFive Year Warranty which the manufacture will replace the compressor (parts only).I looked up for Royal Sovereign's website for a service contact and they showed a total of 10 in California.I called two and were told by both that they do not service Royal Sovereign anymore. I called a 3rd repair shop which is approximately 45 miles from my house. I made an appointment and brought the unit in.They informed me after a week that there was a problem with the compressor and the condenser. Even though, the parts will be supplied by Royal Sovereign but their labor would cost $250.For the price, we could almost purchase a new portable air condition.

I don't understand how the unit would stop working after one year or to be exact, 3 months of usage.I am frustrated that Royal Sovereign does not have enough service locations which made it very difficult to compare price on the repair. The next closest repair shop to me is approximately 60+ miles away and a totally different direction from the first shop that gave me the estimate. And we only live 20 miles East of downtown Los Angeles!

Plasma Cool PC-14E Portable Air Conditioner Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this machine from a local Oreck where I live. It was being advertised for sale long before their stock arrived in the store. I ordered it in spring of 2009 and the machine didn't arrive until nearly the end of July 2009. I used the machine for less than 2 months.At the end of the season I followed the storage instructions (drained the unit, cleaned the filter, unplugged the machine).

When I started it up in April 2010, the machine made a horrid sluggish, grinding noise, similar to that of a dishwasher that hasn't been used in awhile.Turned out that it only made that noise when the cooling function was on, not when it was just set to straight fan.They do not offer in home service and you are expected to drag the machine to their shop for service. Not easy to do if you are a girl who isn't strong, doesn't drive and doesn't have anyone to help you do that.

After 2 weeks and one night of just leaving it run loudly until it either blew up or stopped making noise, I left it running. It stopped making noise and seemingly worked well.

Two days later I come home to a flood in my living room. My entire 5 x 8 foot area rug was completely saturated with water as was my hard wood floor!

The drain plug on these machines is in a really awkward place. It's at the back about 1 inch from the floor. Since this machine is not supposed to collect water, there is no door that you can open to simply empty a bucket. And the little container that they do give you to catch the few "drops" of water that may be left in the unit after this "Nano Misty Technology" was useless because it is created to lay down on the ground.There must have been a gallon of water in the machine. I ended up having to put heavy towels under the drain and catch the water coming out that way.

I had to take 1/2 day off of work (unpaid time). They came and exchanged it with another one.The one I received was not in a box, so I don't know if it was new or a show room model, or a refurbished model that was returned. It is a bit dinged up in some spots, so I have to wonder.

The "new" machine was delivered yesterday afternoon.Today at 5pm, 24 hours after turning it on, I came home to a huge flood in my living room again!!!!And of course they aren't there on Saturday, so I have to live through a hot weekend once again without having any air conditioning because this machine can't be trusted to be used without flooding my hard wood floors and warping them!!!

My advice is to stay far and away from this piece of trash!!!

I'm going to be demanding my money back.

DeLonghi PAC A130HPE Portable Air Conditioner with Heat Pump Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this AC for a 345 sq. ft apt.The apartment is 33'long and the windows at one end.The first unit I had was not cooling at all.Delonghi said it must be defective and the store I purchased from replaced it.

The 2nd unit is "working", but does not cool my apt.The manufacturer claims it is for up to 450 square feet.I think it would work well in a perfectly square enclosed room of 175' with no heat sources.

The temperature in my apt before turning it on was 89.After 4 hours of running it, the temperature around the unit was 85.15 feet away it was 88.I had 3 fans also running to try and circulate the cool air that is coming out of the unit.

Overnight I set the thermostat to 80.It never reached that temperature to shut off.The thermostat seems accurate because when I turn it up it shuts off at the same temperature my room thermometer reads.

On a side note, my central A/C went out last summer and it got up to 83ºF in my house, but the SoleusAir kept it at a cool 68ºF in my room. So you can count on it even under the most demanding loads. It also has a built-in heater as well and it heats as well as it cools. So this is really an all-in-one unit. The only downside(along with any other portable a/c unit) is that you must run 2 hoses(one exhaust, one intake) to a window. It comes with a window installation kit, but I live near a busy street so I can sometimes hear outside noise... but it's not too bad.

But I would highly recommend this product.

(More customer reviews)I purchased just recently, have used it in May when the weather started out cold then quickly to super hot.Using the heater worked wonders.My personal temp usually runs cold and I'm always trying to stay warm, well with this model I found it wasn't lacking nor did I feel over heated.For the rest of the month when the temps were hot my bedroom of 130 sq. ft was quickly cooled, so much so I had a hard time trying to find a temp where I wouldn't be too cold but I think I'm finally getting the swing of things and found my comfort zone.I still haven't figured out how using this machine equates in my electrical bill since the first 1/2 of month was use of the heater then a/c thereafter, and some days not used at all plus the a/c was used almost all day but once I got that bill it wasn't too high it was $92.00 (1 bdrm in NYC), $50.00 more than usual.Now that the newness has worn off I'm only using it when I can't take the heat at all for June and use my fan other times.I'm using it more like I used my window unit that would cool my whole apartment.

As for the water leakage, it does leak a lot but I did the same as Steve Mokris and propped up the unit on a old unfinished stool cushion someone abandoned from my jr. high school wood working class. :)I have a wash basin that catches the water and I usually empty it about once or twice a day and I don't mind doing that -- I think people are so lazy nowadays with all the modern conveniences that for me getting my butt up and grabbing a basin to empty doesn't bother me. lol

I would have gave a rating of 5 but I'm still unsure of the electricity bill in comparison my 10,000 btu window unit which I'd use July - September and my bill would be $130 - $150/mth for electrical rates of .25 cents an hour for kWh in NYC.Con Ed has raised prices so the rate is probably more like .30 cents per kWh now.This unit is 12/A 1350W.If my electricity bills come in under $100/$120 a month I'll be a happy camper.

I highly recommend this unit it really does a good job of cooling and feels just like a window unit and cools fast.Yes it's heavy but it has two slots on each side to grab hold to and it rolls.

(More customer reviews)If you are looking for a portable air conditioner/heat pump avoid this product and manufacturer.While the unit is satisfactory when running, once any problems develop that require service outside the warranty period, you may as well junk it.My unit lasted just 14 months and developed a leak that ruined my floor.Considering that I only used the air conditioning function during the summer, it only lasted one cooling season.

There is no local service network to fix even the most minor problem.I suppose that you could ship the unit back as was suggested by Soleusair for repair, but have you ever struggled with boxing and shipping a large unit that weighs 50 or 60 pounds, to say nothing about the premium shipping and repair cost. It is cheaply made and unreliable
